B is for RE-BALANCE

RE-Balance

Okay, so we get caught up in so many different things that we can often find ourselves out of balance.

It doesn’t happen intentionally – not all the time, anyway.  Most of the time it can creep up on you ever so silently.

Sometimes it builds up to the point where we want to scream out “Make it stop!” Other times it can happen so swiftly that it can knock us on our butts!

Regardless of where it came from or how you got there it’s time to remedy the situation.

Why does this keep happening?  Chances are you’re like most of us and this isn’t the first time things became overwhelming. Take a step back and see if there are any patterns being repeated. Do you keep doing SO many things because you need someone’s approval or love? Have you fallen into the trap of….”If you love me you’ll do this FOR me!”? There are times when people really do need help. Other times people can and do take advantage of others. Often there is a fine line between the two. You may need to take a really good look at where and how you are out of balance.

Let’s take a look….

What am I doing? What is it that keeps demanding so much of my time and attention? Is it a project? A person? A group of people/Organization? Does my job/business take up waaaaay too much of my time because I am such a workhorse?  Really look at the whole picture and decide what ABSOLUTELY has to be done by you and only you. Even if it’s a small part of something let someone help you. If you’re not sure how to do that or who else could possibly help get still, very still and find the answer. Maybe a friend or a family member can come up with an idea or creative way to help you. Allow some help into your life. Even if it’s just a little bit. A little can go a loooong way.

Who have I become? Who keeps draining me? When you look in the mirror do you recognize yourself? Have you positioned yourself in a situation that you think (which may not necessarily be the case) ONLY YOU can do/handle this? Are you holding onto something or someone so tightly that you won’t let go at the cost of your time and maybe even your health? Who can you ask for help…even if it’s a little…even if you’re uncomfortable sharing or letting go of the task at hand? Share the load. You’re health or sanity may depend on it.

Where can I go to get some peace and quiet? Can you schedule a little vacation or some time off? Would you consider a mini- stay-cation? Schedule at least an hour or so (to start) and enjoy something relaxing. A nice hot bath. Read a good book. Try a new recipe. Or maybe you can do absolutely NOTHING. You know what you like. It’s time to enjoy some of that. Its time just for YOU!

When would ‘now’ be a good time? You aren’t getting any younger and tomorrow isn’t guaranteed to anyone. You need to take some positive action for your best interest. If you keep putting this off until…later….tomorrow….when this happens…when so and so does this…..if…when…  It’s time to stop fooling yourself. Even one small change or tweak can make a huge impact on your life. Give it a try. It may just be what you need. It may seem odd or difficult at first. If it doesn’t work you can always go back to way things were. Chances are you just might like and appreciate a little adjustment.

RE-BALANCING yourself may or may not be an easy task. You might not know HOW to do it. You may not WANT to do it because you have yourself so convinced that “This is the only way!”  I invite you to REALLY take a look at your life and situations. You may only need help temporarily. You cannot be everything to everyone. The sooner you realize this the sooner you can take your true power back and have yourself be a priority in your life. This is not impossible.  It might seem unlikely, at first anyway. Somehow, someway there is a way to RE-BALANCE your life. It’s time to take that first step to find out just how to do that.

I wish you well on your journey. You are SO worth it!

I look forward to our next visit together!

Have a BEAUTIFUL day!

RE-ASSESS
Ok…You may be entering unchartered territory here, or perhaps just need to readjust your sails.

It’s time to get down to business…or maybe into pleasure. All work and no play make Jane a dull girl!

Your mission, should you choose to accept it is to tune into this blog series on a regular basis and see how the

A to Z’s of RE-Designing Your Life can help move you in a forward direction. Are you ready?

Ready or not, here we go!

Now is the time to RE-Assess Your Life.

For this activity you can write (journal), draw, make a video or collect/organize physical materials that represent all the activities, experiences and adventures that you have experienced so far in your life for each question listed below. You can choose 1 or all of them if you like. You can always come back to refresh or add to your project whenever and however you decide. Start organizing souvenirs of thoughts, events, accomplishments, photos etc in kind of a time-line fashion. Start from your childhood and move on from there. You can add, rearrange, etc until you have your first draft (this timeline will of course continue so don’t worry about it being completely complete or perfect…just do your best) something you can useas you continue through this challenge…we will put it all together at the end. Please remember there is no right or wrong here…just a work in progress.

Enjoy the journey. It may not have always been easy or enjoyable yet it all has purpose. Let’s begin, shall we?!

expand

Who are you? If you just met someone for the first time, like me perhaps, and were asked to describe yourself and what you stand for and value, what would you say? How would you answer that question? How can you best describe yourself… openly, honestly, (perceived) flaws and all? It’s time to make an inventory list of all the things that make you that special person that you are. This is not for anyone else to see or agree with. This is YOU being all about YOU. No judgement.

What have you experienced? Have you ever taken a look at just how far you’ve come? All the tests, trials and tribulations led you to where you are at this very moment. Did you ever stop and acknowledge yourself for everything that you put up with? Learned? Contributed? You have spent countless hours helping others (and hopefully yourself too somewhere in the mix) and you really DO have value!

When do you make time for yourself? Do you or don’t you? Is it a few minutes here and there…sporadically. Do you carve out an occasional hour or enjoy a leisurely stroll? Are you so caught up in the day to day minutia that you have gotten lost in the shuffle somewhere? What can you do for yourself and by yourself that can brighten your day? Reward yourself with? Enjoy? Can you take a look at your routine and see how you can fit more YOU time into your life?

Where are you going? Do you know? Have any idea? Have you been procrastinating for far too long? Do you have any goals for yourself to accomplish in the next 3 months? 6months? 1 year? Do you have any dreams that need dusting off and put back into action?

Why do you do the things you do? Have you ever stopped to think about how and why you do the things you do? Was it passed down from generation to generation? Did you pick up any interesting ideas, traditions, and points of view along the way? Do they serve you well?

Okay, so this is more than enough to start with. It may take some time to pull together. I know you can do this! You are so worth it. Some answers may surprise you. Please do yourself the favor and check in for the complete A to Z series. Even if you’re not up for the challenge yet it may serve you in the future as you pick up ideas along the way.

Have an AMAZING day, I look forward to our next visit together.

These…HANDS

‘These…..Hands’

Have you ever stopped and thought about all the things your hands have experienced in your lifetime?love hands - Copy

What creative ways do you use your hands? Are you able to connect with and appreciate nature with all of its beauty and legacy?

Do you communicate with others through expressing yourself with your hands? Use sign language to ‘speak,’ or shake hands as a greeting?

Several years ago I remember celebrating ‘HANDS ACROSS AMERICA.’ People from the east coast to the west coast all joined hands. It was a wonderful celebration of community and connection. I was a teacher at the time and remember the whole school getting involved with tracing little cutouts of themselves (almost like stick people) and after cutting them out they were displayed on the walls in the hallway. All the hands were connected from one end of the school to the other, it was beautiful!

Do you connect with others through touch? Is your hand shake firm, whimpy or in-between? Do you acknowledge your pet, help a child or lend someone a helping hand? I remember playing ‘Miss Mary Mack” and ‘Hands up’ during recess at school although my favorite activity was jumping rope. Did you ever get stuck being the one who had a longer turn ‘turning’ the rope because everyone was able to jump longer and enjoy it?

dance hands - CopyWhat purpose do your hands serve? Do you use them in your career?

Have you ever enjoyed playing a musical instrument? How many hours a day do you/can you spend at the computer playing wii or getting sucked into a video game?

Primarily all self-care is ‘hands on.’ Do you have a long ritual of taking care of your hair or lotioning your skin? Have you ever given yourself a hug?

How intimate are your hands? How do you enjoy sensuality?

Are you ever aggressive with your hands? Have you ever hit or hurt someone with them?

Have you ever dealt with an injury where you couldn’t use one or either of your hands? Life can be pretty challenging in that case. I admire people with amazing coping skills. My great-grandmother had to raise a family, take care of herself and a house with only the use of 1 hand.

Are you a Lefty or a Righty? Can you write with both hands?

Some people I know write with one hand yet play sports with the opposite hand.old hands - Copy

Do you drive with your hands on 10 and 2 or do your own thing? I usually drive with only 1 hand.

How much driving can you actually do before your hands get tired?

Do you wear nail polish to go with all of your outfits? Wear a ring…or many?

Are your hands involved in any rituals or customs such as prayer? Meditation? Celebration? Expressive dance?

dough hands - CopyHave you nurtured others by cooking or baking something special for them? My favorite expression of this is baking and decorating cupcakes…mini ones. Sometimes it’s quite a challenge, other times, well…it’s a piece of…cake.

These……EYES

These…..EYES
It is said that the eyes are the windows to the soul. A soul that sees and experiences so much each and every day.

It is a way of communication, of receiving, of giving, of sharing, of connecting, of bonding.

Many a song has been written about eyes; “Sad Eyes,” “Eye of The Tiger,” “These Eyes” for example. My personal favorite is “In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel. That song has always moved me. When I got older I felt the words come alive as I looked into a lovers eyes and finally saw myself, my beauty, my worth, my value, for myself as well as for the other. Truly moving.

z eye pic 5

Have you ever stopped and thought about all that you have seen? Witnessed?

My eyes have experienced a lot. They have seen…

The Sadness and Pain… in other peoples’ eyes as they go through life carrying their burdens and perceptions. Of being betrayed, lied to, stolen from, of being taken advantage of. My own pain of seeing the horrific injustices done against others and myself, realizing that humanity seems to be dwindling in compassion and connection at times.

The Joy of …children laughing and playing, of contentment of those who have found peace and stillness, of people gathered together in celebration.

The Happiness of complete strangers exchanging glances with me as we pass each other on the street, never to see each other again yet we will each remember the other because of the smiles in our eyes that we have shared.zz1

The Fear of being seen… for a myriad of reasons, for safety, of prejudice, of lack.

The Surprise of… receiving an unexpected gift, idea, party or news.

The Lust… that blinds others in their quest for connection, power, control, pleasure.

The Anger of… a maniac, a drunk, a bully, of someone so out of control that they got completely absorbed by and lost in their anger. I have seen the Anger of someone who was wronged, hurt, insulted, denied.

The Love of parents, of children, of friends, of lovers, for nature, for pets, for God.

The Shock of… a loss, a gain, unexpected information, denial, death and even life.

There have been many wonderful Happy tears, and countless, seemingly never ending tears of sadness. I have heard of angry tears but have not experienced them myself. Have you?

zz4

My eyes are your eyes.

Have you ever “shut” your eyes to not see something? Someone? Because you just couldn’t bear it anymore? Because you didn’t know how to handle something, not know what to say? To do?

What color are your eyes? What colors of makeup do you put on your eyelids? Eyelashes? Does makeup enhance your beauty? Do you use it as a mask to hide, deceive, entice? Do you wear it all the time? Never? Just for special occasions?

Do you wear glasses? How do they make you feel? Do you wear contacts? Are they clear or colored/designed?

Do you take care of your eyes? Get regular checkups? Use wrinkle cream? Day Cream? Night cream?

What do your eyes reflect? Covet? Admire? Despise?zz3

Whose eyes do you avoid? Why? Whose eyed could you gaze into forever?

Have you ever looked into your own eyes in the mirror and said “I love you,” “Great job,” “You rock!”?

If your eyes could speak what can they tell me that they have seen?

This post is a first in a series of “these”. Please come by and visit from time to time and see what’s on the menu. I would love your feedback and participation. Have a wonderful day. Hope to “SEE” you here again.
